World Book Day March 7th 2024

The children came to school dressed as their favourite character and enjoyed a range of activities relating to reading in school on this day.

World Book Day’s work is based on the evidence of what encourages children to read for pleasure. This tells us there are 6 elements which support a child to read for pleasure:

  • Being read to regularly
  • Access to books at home
  • The ability for children to choose what they want to read
  • Having trusted adults and peers sharing and recommending books
  • The reading experience being enjoyable
  • Designated time to read
Please see the recommended reading lists for suggested books to share with your child.
WORLD BOOK DAY POEM
Tavistock Primary took a stranger on a walk, finding and discovering new things but not quite wanting to settle... until they found the perfect place to stay...our school!
With authors from Nursery to Year 6, follow the strangers journey below....

This Day

This day I went for a walk in the jungle,

I saw a cheeky monkey

Throwing bananas

And so, I decided to keep walking.

This day, I went for a walk in the forest,

I saw a brown deer crunching

I heard a grizzly bear growling

I touched a stag

I smelt a skunk

I tasted a sweet strawberry

And so, I decided to keep walking.

This day, I went for a walk in the desert,

I can see a Camel

I can hear the snake slithering,

I can see an Eagle,

I can hear the tree's swaying.

And so, I decided to keep walking.

This day, I went for a walk under the sea,

I saw gigantic fish twice the size of me

I saw sting rays glide through the shimmering water

The towering kelp making me feel shorter

I felt a sharp nip at my toe

It was a giant king crab, oh no!

Now I don’t like ocean!

And so, I decided to keep walking.

This day, I went for a walk on Dartmoor,

I could feel the breeze as I hiked over the jagged, granite rock,

The vast expanse of land, allowed River Dart to gush rapidly through,

As I gazed into the distance the munch of grass echoed from ponies

Elevating over the highest tor, the woods fell far beneath,

The mysterious mist and freezing rain caught us unawares!

A place full of myths and legends

There were pixies and imps dancing amongst the bracken

And a witches coven cackling in the stone circles

Then as I strolled on through Postbridge the mist began to fall,

Across the bridge I wondered

A gentle squeeze I felt, a cold breath on my neck

Oh no the Hairy Hands had got me

Quick

And so, I decided to keep walking…

This day, I went for a walk through Tavistock,

Innocent children watch with glee,
As the river flows wild and free.
The mayor greets with voice so bright,
While pastries fill the air with delight.
Tall grass sways on the ground below,
Church bells chime with gentle flow,
Drake stands guard and does no talking.

And so, I decided to keep walking.

This day,  I went for a walk into Tavistock Primary School,

AND

It was chish and fip Friday...or ....was it chip and fish Fryyyyyy day?

SNIFFF!!   AHHHHH!!

Fish and chip Friday!

Whistle blasts.

Children STOP

Children START

To run the mile...

The lawn mower cut grass.... Fresh and fragrant

Vibrant sunshine through the glass

Friends, smiling, beckoning to join their class

And so...  I decided to stay.
